What to Look for When You Visit a Martial Arts School in Cave Creek
October 29, 2026 by Chief Master Greg Moody, Ph.D.
The best way to choose a martial arts school in Cave Creek is to watch a real class, let your child train for two weeks, and ask five specific questions before you decide anything. At KarateBuilt Martial Arts, every family starts with 2 Weeks Free PLUS a Bonus FREE Uniform, so you get every one of those answers on the training floor (not from a brochure).
Call (602) 737-2098 to book your first class, or stop by 29850 N. Tatum Blvd. Suite 105 and watch one.
I’ve trained for nearly four decades and owned schools for over thirty years. Parents ask me the same questions every month, and most of them are the right ones. Here’s the checklist I’d hand a friend who was visiting any school in town, including mine.
What do you watch for in the first five minutes of a class?
Watch the instructors before you watch the kids. A good instructor knows students by name, gives corrections a child can act on right away, and keeps the whole class moving while helping one student. “Good job” is nice. “Bring your back foot in line with your front foot” is teaching.
Then watch the kids who are struggling. Every class has one. How the instructor handles that child is how they’ll handle yours on a hard day.
One amazing thing that happens on a wonderfully regular basis is how a more experienced student will help a new student with a move or how to bow or any one of a number of things. An instructor may prompt this by saying, “Miss XYZ, show Mr. QRS how to do a good front kick.” The wonderful part is when Miss XYZ does this without being told to. And that does happen often.
How can you tell the instructors know how to teach young children?
A four-year-old and a nine-year-old learn differently, so ask how the classes are split. At KarateBuilt, preschoolers ages 3 to 6 train in their own program, and kids 7 and up train in a separate one. Teens and adults have their own classes too.
Ask who’ll actually teach your child’s class, and ask how they handle a child who won’t step onto the floor the first day (every school has met that child). You’ll learn more from that answer than from any certificate on the wall.
At KarateBuilt, our instructors are rigorously trained and certified. Many began by training at our school, whether starting as kids or adults. Those that want to go on to be instructors have spent much time on the mat working with the younger children and school-age kids under the supervision of an experienced instructor.
What does tuition actually cover?
This is the question that saves families the most frustration. Many martial arts schools charge separately for belt tests, sparring gear, uniforms and events, and those charges show up after you’ve joined.
Don’t say, “Is it expensive?” Say this: “What does tuition cover, and what costs extra?” The first question gets you a sales answer. The second gets you a list.
At KarateBuilt, tuition is all-inclusive. It covers uniforms, sparring gear, belts, special events and Parent Nights Out, and there are no belt testing fees at any rank. We don’t list prices online. We want you to see the school and watch your child train first, and then we walk you through the program that fits.
How often do students test, and what does each test cost?
Belt tests give kids a clear target, and kids work harder when they can see the next step. Ask how often testing happens and what a student has to show to move up.
At KarateBuilt, testing runs on a semester schedule of eight to ten weeks. Each test costs nothing extra. When your child earns the next belt, the belt’s included!
That matters to your child as much as to your budget. When a test carries no fee, the only question on testing day is whether your child is ready… and nothing else.
What happens during the first two weeks?
Your child trains in regular classes with the students who are already enrolled, wearing the free uniform that comes with the trial. You get to watch, ask questions (ask a lot of them), and see whether your child wants to come back.
In week one, your child learns the routine of class: the warm-up, the drills, where to stand, and how class finishes, while the instructors learn their name and give them one or two specific corrections they can use right away. By week two, the nerves have mostly worn off, and with the routine in place, your child can put more attention on the corrections and start to show who they really are on the floor. That shift, from a nervous visitor to a student who knows where to line up, is usually the moment parents see the real kid.
By the end of two weeks, you’ll know three things: whether your child likes the instructors, whether the class pace fits, and whether you see a change at home. If the answer is yes, we talk about which program fits. Book the trial at (602) 737-2098.
How will you know martial arts is working for your child?
Look for changes outside the school first. Better listening at home. Fewer arguments about homework. A kid who looks adults in the eye when they talk. Those are the results parents report most often, and they usually show up before the first new belt.
If your child tried martial arts before and quit, it’s not your fault, and it isn’t your child’s either. The fit was wrong. Kids who quit one program often thrive in the next one (I’ve watched it happen for over thirty years).
One Cave Creek parent put it this way in a Google review: “Our son’s confidence has increased tremendously since starting at KarateBuilt!”
There’s no shortcut to that. I tell parents, “The magic is there’s no magic.” The same habits, repeated in class after class, build the confidence you see at home.
Is KarateBuilt the right fit for every family?
No school fits every child, and a good school will tell you that. If your child wants to spend most of the class grappling on the ground, a jiu-jitsu program is a different path, and it’s a good one. If you want structure, character development and a curriculum your child can see laid out belt by belt, come watch a class with us.
At KarateBuilt, your child trains in Songahm Taekwondo, the traditional Korean style taught through the American Taekwondo Associ
ation, and we call our kids program Karate for Kids because that’s the word most parents use when they walk in the door.
