Strong Heart Academy Scottsdale: Grappling Gym or Kids Program, and What a Parent Actually Gets

By Chief Master Greg Moody
Ph.D., 8th Degree Black Belt, founder of KarateBuilt Martial Arts in Cave Creek, Arizona

You searched “Strong Heart Academy Scottsdale” because someone told you grappling is the real deal for self-defense. Maybe a coworker trains there. Maybe you watched a jiu-jitsu match online and thought about your seven-year-old, who’s small for his age and has had a rough year at recess.

Now you’re trying to figure out whether that school is the right place for a child that young.

I run a competing school, so read this with that in mind. Strong Heart is a serious training room, and I’ll say so plainly. Every fact I use about it comes from its own website, where you can check it yourself.

Is Strong Heart Academy a good school?

Yes. Strong Heart is a serious Brazilian jiu-jitsu school with a long record, a respected affiliation, and a real competition culture.

Here is what stands out.

Longevity. Strong Heart says it opened in 2009, which makes it one of the longest-running jiu-jitsu schools in the north Phoenix area. Its school sits on East Union Hills Drive in North Phoenix, near Desert Ridge, and it serves families from Scottsdale as well.

A respected network. The school is affiliated with the Caio Terra Association, the team network founded by multiple-time world champion Caio Terra. That affiliation connects students to a technical system tested at the highest levels of the sport.

A head instructor with range. Professor Mike Martin holds black belts in both karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Real competition. Students compete in local tournaments, and the school runs dedicated competition and advanced classes. Results on the mat are hard proof. You can’t fake a win against a stranger who’s trying just as hard as you are.

A full ladder of programs. Strong Heart offers kids classes by age, teen classes, adult jiu-jitsu with and without the uniform, and mixed martial arts.

Character in the kids program. Its kids page describes a rewards program for grades, reading, volunteering, and chores at home, and youth competition requires keeping grades up. Kids competition is optional.

If you’re an adult who wants to train hard, or you have a teenager who wants to compete, Strong Heart is one of the strongest options in the north Valley.

Who is Strong Heart built for?

Strong Heart is built first around the sport of jiu-jitsu, and it serves two different buyers under one roof.

That distinction matters more than any other part of this comparison, so I’ll lay it out plainly.

The first buyer is the adult who wants to train hard. This person wants to roll with resistance, sharpen technique, sweat through advanced classes, and maybe compete. For that buyer, Strong Heart’s advanced classes, competition training, and open mats are exactly the right product.

The second buyer is the parent of a seven-year-old. This parent wants a child who’s more confident, more respectful, and better at handling frustration, with real self-defense built in. Grappling can absolutely be part of that. The question is what the class is organized around.

Both buyers are legitimate. They’re simply shopping for different things, and a parent does their child a favor by knowing which one they are before the first class.

What is kids grappling in Scottsdale like for a seven-year-old?

Kids grappling classes, including Strong Heart’s, typically run through a warm-up, technique, drilling, and live rolling with a partner.

ThMom and kid talking to an Instructor and looking at a wall chart.at structure has real strengths. Grappling teaches a child to control another person without striking, which is valuable for a kid facing a bully. Live rolling gives honest feedback. A child learns within seconds whether a technique works.

It also asks a lot of some young kids. Rolling means close, physical contact with a peer who’s resisting as hard as they can. Some seven-year-olds love that from the first night. Others find it overwhelming for a while and need a slower build.

I’ve spent years in special education and counseling, and I’ve watched both kinds of kids. Both can become excellent martial artists. They simply need a different first year.

How is KarateBuilt structured differently?

KarateBuilt organizes its whole kids program around character development, with self-defense and physical skill built inside that curriculum.

What class is built around. At KarateBuilt, every class works on a character skill alongside the physical ones: focus, respect, self-control, and how to recover after a mistake. Self-defense and bully prevention are part of that curriculum, and competition is available to kids who want it.

How contact is introduced. A child builds skill and confidence in a structured sequence before partner work gets more intense. For the sensitive seven-year-old, that pace keeps them in the room long enough to get good.

Programs by age. We run a preschool program for ages 3 to 6 and a separate program for kids 7 and up, because young children learn in very different ways at each stage.

Who designed the program. I founded KarateBuilt in 1995 and built its curriculum myself. My background runs through aerospace engineering, a Ph.D. in special education, and a master’s in counseling, and I’m a licensed associate counselor. Every one of those fields shaped how we teach a young child.

Our school has been named Go2Karate Nation’s #1 Martial Arts School eight times.

One honest note. If grappling is the specific skill you want, Strong Heart specializes in it and KarateBuilt is a karate-based school. Decide which skill set matters most for your family, and choose the school that teaches it best.

How far is Strong Heart from Cave Creek?

Strong Heart is on East Union Hills Drive in North Phoenix, south of the 101, so most Cave Creek families will drive south across the freeway to reach it.

Check the trip in your map app for a weekday at 4:30. Two classes a week means four drives, every week, for years. If you live near Desert Ridge, the math favors Strong Heart, and it should.

How do you decide which program fits your child?

Figure out which buyer you are, then watch a beginner kids class at each school with that answer in mind.

Here’s a short checklist to bring.

Name your goal. Write down the one thing you most want your child to gain this year. Confidence? Self-control? Grappling skill? A shot at competing? Your answer points toward the right school.

Watch the minutes. During a kids class, notice how the time divides between technique, live partner work, and anything aimed at character or behavior.

Watch the hard moment. Wait for a child to get pinned, tap, or get frustrated. See what the instructor does next and how the child responds.

Ask about competition. Find out how tournaments fit into the program, and what happens for a child who never wants to compete.

Ask your child. On the drive home, ask which room they want to go back to. Their answer counts.

Both schools will serve the right child well. The goal is to match the program to the child you actually have.

How do I see a KarateBuilt Cave Creek class?

Call the school, tell us your child’s age, and come watch a class from start to finish.

If you want a program built around your child rather than around competition, come see a KarateBuilt Cave Creek class. We’re at 29850 North Tatum Boulevard, Suite 105.

Here is your next step. Tonight, write your one goal for your child on a sticky note. Bring it to class, watch for that goal in action, and ask the instructor afterward how our curriculum would build it.

Sincerely,

Karate
