Some Real Truth about Self-Esteem…

So as one of out students’ parents said to us recently:

“Ibu has increased in self-confidence, especially when pursuing goals” Tina Brooks

If you got to watch the Self-Esteem Success Training Part I or Self-Esteem Success Training Part II  there are a lot of misconceptions about developing self-esteem.

Some of these misconceptions can really damage our kids’ confidence!

One of the myths of building self esteem is that affirmations work… well they DO, sort of – so it’s only partially a myth I guess. They work if you’re affirming what we already believe. In other words, if you affirm something I don’t believe is true like… “Hey you look great!” and I feel like I look lousy… well then, that affirmation makes me feel worse NOT better.

If, however, it’s something I also believe… for example as I make achievements getting closer to my goals… IT WORKS GREAT!

Our martial arts example is each class, and each 2 month “semester” we set goals for students (sometimes these are “karate belts” sometimes other goals) and when they achieve these visible clear goals on their way to a bigger goal (Black Belt or higher), it’s easy for parents – and themselves – to affirm how wonderfully they are doing…

Because They TRULY ARE Doing Great…

Self-Esteem (positive Self-Esteem = Confidence – the kind we want to build) is built when we are genuinely improving and we can see it… adding affirming statements on at this point multiplies this growth exponentially!

Sincerely,

Karate

Ch. Master Nominee Greg Moody, Ph.D.
