Scottsdale Martial Arts Center: What a Cave Creek Family Gains and Gives Up on the Drive

By Chief Master Greg Moody, Ph.D., 8th Degree Black Belt, ATA Songahm Taekwondo

You’ve been reading Scottsdale Martial Arts Center reviews on Yelp and Nextdoor, and the school keeps coming up. A neighbor’s kid trains there, the free class looks easy to try, and you’re wondering whether it’s worth the drive from Cave Creek.

That’s a fair question, and you deserve a fair answer.

I run a competing school, so read this with that in mind. Every fact I use about Scottsdale Martial Arts Center comes from its own public website, where you can check it yourself, and where I’m unsure of something, I’ll say so.

Who is Scottsdale Martial Arts Center and how long have they been teaching?

Scottsdale Martial Arts Center is a traditional karate school that has taught in the Valley since 1986, which makes it one of the longest-running schools in the area.

Here’s what its own pages say. The owner, Ray Hughes, holds senior dan ranks in Wado Ryu karate from several organizations, and the school traces its roots back to a Mesa karate school he took over in 1976. The current facility opened in 2002.

The school teaches Wado Ryu and Shotokan karate, Okinawan kobudo weapons, and jujutsu. It lists programs for preschoolers, kids, teens, and adults, and it names a long roster of black belt instructors, several holding fourth and fifth degree ranks.

It also has a competition record. A 2020 USA Karate club profile reported that the school joined that organization in 2010 and that a few of its students had made the USA Junior National Team.

Nearly forty years of teaching earns real respect. A school doesn’t last that long in this Valley without serving a lot of families well.

What does their free first class include?

Their kids page currently advertises a free semi-private class plus a voucher for a free uniform, which the school values at $110, and the uniform voucher requires enrolling in the program.

The offer is labeled limited-time, so the details may change. Call the school and confirm what’s included before you book.

A free semi-private class is a genuinely low-pressure way to start. A nervous child gets more attention than they would in a full class, and a parent gets a feel for the instructors without committing to anything.

Keep in mind what a single class can and can’t show you. One session tells you whether your child likes the room. It takes a few weeks to see whether the program is building the skills you came for.

How far is it from Cave Creek, really?

The school’s operating address is in Phoenix, at 20650 N. 29th Place, in the 85050 ZIP code, so most Cave Creek families will be driving into north Phoenix to reach it.

The name can be a little confusing here. A parent who searches for martial arts in Scottsdale may expect a Scottsdale address, and this school’s current location sits within Phoenix city limits.

I won’t guess at your drive time, because it depends on where in Cave Creek or Carefree you live and when classes meet. Put both addresses into your map app for a weekday afternoon at the hour your child would actually train, and time it both ways.

Here’s an honest note on what the research says. A Dutch study of teenage athletes found that distance to the club hardly predicted who quit, while how young people spent their time did (Deelen et al., 2018). Kids who practiced on their own and took part in the club’s social life were more likely to keep going.

In other words, a longer drive won’t doom your child’s training. It will cost your family evenings, though, and it can make it harder for your child to train alongside kids from their own school and neighborhood.

What should a Cave Creek parent compare besides price?

Compare the drive, the method, and how clearly each school explains what your child will learn at every stage.

Price matters, and both schools will happily tell you theirs. The bigger differences show up in three other places.

The drive, multiplied. Two classes a week means four trips, every week, for years. Multiply your timed drive by that number before you decide.

The published method. When I read through Scottsdale Martial Arts Center’s website, I found clear goals for students, like focus, respect, confidence, and practical self-defense. I didn’t find much detail about how the program is sequenced from belt to belt or how classes change by age. That detail may well exist in their intro class or a parent handbook, so ask them directly.

Who designed the curriculum, and whether that person teaches. Ask each school who built the program your child will follow and how often that person is on the floor.

The first mistake. Watch a beginner class at each school and wait for a child to get something wrong. Notice what the instructor says and how quickly that child is back in line and trying again.

Bring those questions to both schools, including mine, and write down the answers. Comparing method on paper is much easier than comparing a feeling you had in the lobby.

What does KarateBuilt do differently?

KarateBuilt is a Cave Creek school with a documented, age-sequenced curriculum designed by a founder who still teaches it.

I founded the school in 1995 and built the curriculum myself, rooted in ATA Songahm Taekwondo. Before that, I worked as an aerospace engineer. I went on to earn a Ph.D. in special education and a Master of Counseling, and I’ve written 20 books.

Each of those fields shows up in how we teach. We sequence every belt so it builds directly on the last one. We run a preschool program for ages 3 to 6 and a separate program for kids 7 and up, because young children learn so differently at each stage. And we coach frustration, focus, and recovery after a mistake as deliberately as we coach a front kick.

Over thirty-plus years, we’ve trained more than 18,000 students and produced more than 1,800 Black Belts. Our school has been named Go2Karate Nation’s #1 Martial Arts School eight consecutive times.

Tenure tells you a school has lasted. A documented method tells you what your child will actually learn there, and how. A parent deserves to see both.

Which family is each school right for?

Scottsdale Martial Arts Center is the better fit for a family that lives near north Phoenix and wants traditional Wado Ryu or Shotokan karate with deep lineage.

It’s also a strong choice if your child wants a path into competitive karate, or if your family is drawn to weapons training or jujutsu alongside karate. If the school is close to your home or your child’s school, that’s a real advantage over years of weekly classes.

If your child has already tried their free class and loved it, take that seriously. A child who asks to go back is halfway to a lasting habit, and that matters more than any table I can draw.

KarateBuilt is the better fit for a Cave Creek or Carefree family that wants training close to home, a curriculum you can see laid out belt by belt, and a founder with a background in special education and counseling designing how your child is taught.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scottsdale Martial Arts Center in Scottsdale or Phoenix?

How long is the drive from Cave Creek?

It depends on where you live and what time you’d travel. Enter both addresses in your map app for a weekday afternoon at your child’s class hour and check the time each way.

Does KarateBuilt teach the same age range?

Both schools teach preschoolers through adults. KarateBuilt runs a preschool program for ages 3 to 6, a kids program for ages 7 and up, and adult classes.
