Hard Work, Honest Results
Two KarateBuilt Students on What Martial Arts Actually Did for Them
Some people walk through the doors of KarateBuilt Martial Arts Academy looking for a workout. Others are searching for something harder to name. What they find, if they stick with it, tends to surprise them.
Dustin O’Donnell is 24 years old and in the middle of paramedic training, which is its own kind of demanding. He came back to Taekwondo as an adult after practicing when he was younger, and something clicked. He talks about confidence, motivation, the pull of learning a new weapon or a new move. He has his eye on Black Belt. In his own words, he’s having one of the best times of his life.
Zach Mihlbauer is 15, and he came in as a kid who needed to build some coordination, some endurance, some self-control. He did all of that, and then he earned his 1st Degree Black Belt. He had just completed his fitness test when the video was taken, and it tells you most of what you need to know about where he is now: he pushed himself hard, and he kept going.
These are two very different people at very different stages of life. What they share is straightforward: they decided to commit, and they did. Watch their stories.
Below, you’ll find Dustin’s and Zach’s full video and transcript.
Dustin O’Donnell
“So since starting Karate Built Martial Arts, I’ve regained my love for Taekwondo. I was doing it originally when I was younger, and now as an adult, I’m getting into it again and I’m having probably one of the best times of my life right now.
It’s definitely given me more confidence, passionate about it. I’m motivated every time I come to class. And it could be whether or not I’m doing a new weapon or new moves, it all matters to me because it’s pushing me forward to the next level, the next belt and eventually, I guess my primary goal is getting the black belt, which would be my next thing. And yeah, that’s mostly why I’m in this.”
Zach Mihlbauer
Bret Mihlbauer: “So karate has been fantastic for Zach. When he started, he lacked a little bit of coordination and skill, and some endurance, and maybe persevering in self-control. But he’s gained a lot of that. He made it to black belt, so that’s been fantastic, and he’s going to continue with his karate.”
Zach: “When I first started I wasn’t in as good shape and I didn’t really push myself as much. But today, when I was doing my fit test, I really pushed myself. And I did feel kind of sick after that, but I pushed myself a lot.”
