Karate has taught me that I can do more physically and mentally than I thought possible…

Another Black Belt Story! From Kori Fine

My understanding of karate has changed from before I started, during the training, and now that I am so near achieving Black Belt.  When I started, I was not planning on being a part of the action.  I wanted something that would teach the kids discipline, self-control and achievement.  After joining, I appreciated being able to progress with the children.  Now that we are so close to Black Belt, I have found the time spent with the kids in learning discipline, perseverance, and self-control invaluable for us all.

Karate has taught me that I can do more physically and mentally than I thought possible.  This knowledge has spilled over to the other areas of my life.  I have traveled to Ghana, Africa twice with an organization called WATERisLIFE where we have provided clean water solutions, sanitation, hygiene teaching, etc. for villagers who live in a very primitive way.  I am traveling back to Ghana Nov. 12-23, and I am very grateful you are allowing us to all graduate together on an alternate day.  It has been very important that the kids and I have traveled this martial arts road together – from beginning to end!

The life skills of respect, honor, self-control, and perseverance have been the most influential in my life.  Respecting all other and showing honor to those who are of higher rank have been important threads throughout.  Listening position, line up, bending down on one knee and picking up dropped weapons with both hands, and bowing in and out of each session helps to show this honor and respect.

Karate has helped me improve self-control (focus, breathing, physical fitness) and perseverance through the pre-qualifications, fit tests, and graduations.  It has increased my self-esteem because I can do things I never thought possible before.  I have been an example of follow-through, perseverance, and increased fitness for my children and other family members.

Thanks for a Great Black Belt Story!!
