Karate and Bullying Prevention!

Karate is the number one thing you can do for bullying prevention!

This is the introduction for my upcoming book on bullying! I thought I would share it early for everyone! I hope you enjoy it!

Bullying is the most common danger affecting children today – 1 in 3 kids are affected by bullying at any given time. Unfortunately, just about all strategies (in elementary schools, churches, in “common knowledge”) do not work and are based on myths and misperceptions that can damage kids in severe and profound ways.

This book will reveal these very common, damaging myths, show the real research and data that will help parents, educators and anyone who wants to help kids actually help!
This work came from my work on both “sides” of my life. When I started work on the subject I was completing my doctoral work at Arizona State University and at the same time, as a Martial Arts school owner and 6th degree Black Belt at the time, I was working with the American Taekwondo Association on developing a bullying prevention curriculum for fellow martial arts instructors. In a strange twist, while my 3 years long academic work on kids with autism ground to a halt (that’s a story for another book), this topic raised my interest because of the magnitude of the problem of bullying, but the magnitude of the misconceptions of the issue.

We are going to look at the public view bullying but in the view of my fellow martial artists – who as you can imagine – see this issue all the time, had an even more varied idea of the problem and therefore created more myths about the cause. Unfortunately this resulted in more problematic solutions – “well I know you probably don’t tell people this… because it’s politically incorrect… but I KNOW you should just hit the bully…. Then they’ll leave you alone. That’ll work 100 percent of the time!” is a verbatim quote from a very prominent martial artist. I imagine you know other people (and let’s face it – maybe inside you think this yourself) who feel that this is really the best solution. Truthfully it’s OK if they do feel this way because that’s a common idea. What we’re going to look into is what these common myths are any why they won’t work – yet provide some solutions that will.

Another thing you need to accept, however, is that bullying, like many things in life, is complex. And as such requires complex solutions. There are lots of simple solutions-of-the-day that commonly promoted nowadays which are not effective. Beware. If your staff listens to a consultant do a one-time lecture or students watch a video and write nice letters to each other… well I am sorry to tell you that quick solutions like these simply don’t work. Fixing the problem requires understanding the issues, being honest about what’s really happening, having a great plan and constantly working towards solutions. Negative behavior is part of being human and the way to make things better (because it will not be eliminated) is continuous attention to the issue.
