Everybody, we’re talking today about our new time frame that we’re in right now, which is our train for life season.
And you can see our board here. What is your vision for your life? And it’s a little different than the time we go through at the end of the year.
Senior Master Sanborn, I’m glad to have you here today.@11:27 – Laura Sanborn (Sr. Master)
Thanks a lot for being here, ma’am. Thank you, sir.@11:30 – Greg Moody (Chief Master Greg Moody, Ph.D.)
Happy to be here. All right. This is awesome. And all of our instructors and I, we got together and we want to have a time in the right before the end of the school year and whether you’re an adult or not.
It doesn’t matter. You’re not in school, but for everybody that we talked about, how your marsh floor is training affects the rest of your life.
Now, the end of the year, the end of the actual calendar year, we talk about your training and how you’re planning out the next calendar year.
So the end of 2020. two or 20, 23 or 20, 24. We’re going to talk about the next calendar year.
But this time of year, we’re talking about how your martial arts training affects the rest of your life. So when you’re getting your black belt or first degree, second degree, third degree, and senior Master Sanborn Ward’s case, when she’s working on her eighth degree black belt, how, excuse me, getting your eighth degree, or in my case, planning on working on my ninth degree black belt, is going to affect the rest of your life.
So you’re going to have a few things happen during this time. One of them is you’re going to fill out your vision board, which is what Master Sanborn Ward has in front of her right now, which covers all the life skills that we work on respect, discipline, communication, vision, especially.
And that’s at the bottom, at the very bottom, if you want to show them that last part. And these are going to be really important.
One of the ideas of vision is when you’re going to get your first, second, third degree black belt, or if you’re already a third degree black belt, when you’re going to get your four, fifth, six degree black belt.
And that’s one piece. But also what’s that going to mean in the rest of your life? And that’s where we come in to help you talk about that difference.
Because getting your black belt is one thing that that teaches you some martial arts. But what that’s going to mean for how you are going to affect your own life in terms of confidence and what confidence is going to mean.
Is that going to mean that you’re going to go to college? Is that going to mean you’re going to get a different type of work in profession?
And how what are your main goals for the rest of your life? So this is what train for life means.
How all of the things that you do in your martial arts class affects everything else you do in your life.
Master Sanborn, you want to give everything to add on to that?@13:43 – Laura Sanborn (Sr. Master)
Yes, sir. We know that people that set goals and have a vision for their life are more successful. And that’s part of the reason we wanted to do this a little bit differently this time.
We always set a vision, we set goals. But how do. the life skills that we teach every single day affect those goals and make you more successful.
And you’ve got to know that and be able to verbalize it at least come to yourself, if not to other people, to be successful.
So we wanted to talk about those in such a way that we’re training you for your life to be successful.@14:24 – Greg Moody (Chief Master Greg Moody, Ph.D.)
You said it really well and it’s not it’s verbalizing and you know that people talk about communicating better for example.
That’s one of our life skills, but to really do it, we talk about what that means is understanding first and be understanding be understood second.
And when you’re in our leadership program or in for some of our students in our instructor program, we really train on those skills.
We want to help you with how that makes a difference in other areas of your life. This isn’t just about saying words and saying commitment or saying vision or saying.
saying self-esteem or saying things and you just saying words just to make it sound good. We want this to make a specific actual operational difference in your life.
And you said it really well. It’s not just about the words existing on posters on the wall. It’s about us taking some time to talk about what this really means and how it’s going to matter.
And for the parents listening of our kids or our children that are students, we want to challenge you a little bit to take some time to think about how that’s going to matter in your kids life.
Because if it matters in your kids life, then you’re going to and you have that vision and you have that idea in your head, then it’s going to manifest itself for your kids.
And we’re just not we’re not making this up as some, you know, just a ethereal idea. This is going to be hard.
This is hard evidence that that will make a difference in your kids’ life. If you have an expectation that your kid can learn to communicate really well, then we’re
when they’re five, six, seven, 12, 16, 18, when they’re an adult, and that’s one of the biggest problems adults have is being able to communicate well, they’ll be able to communicate well.
When we think about them having really great self-discipline, not just discipline when people tell them what to do, but self-discipline, they’ll learn to do that at a younger age, and then when they’re an adult, what do you have a problem with at work if you’re an adult?
Usually other people around you that don’t communicate well, that aren’t very disciplined, that don’t show up on time, that don’t provide you with the things that you need to have at work, that’s what you usually have trouble with and that you can blame about.
So we want them to be the kind of people that everybody else likes because they’re naturally disciplined, they feel okay about being disciplined.
So these things are real operational skills that we want them to learn, and we take that really seriously. So that’s what this time is about.
So what’s gonna happen? You’re gonna have the board, you’re also gonna have a meeting with your master Sanborn. the other instructional staff of what’s going to happen over the next couple months.
And we’re going to also do some other drills and activities in the school. So we’re really looking forward to how this is going to come out and how this is going to happen.
And we’re excited about having you be part of that. Did I miss anything, ma’am?@17:15 – Laura Sanborn (Sr. Master)
No, sir. And part of the reason we decided to do this is it changes for people. We’re doing every single student.
And we don’t care if they are brand new to our system. We just came in last week. Or if it’s somebody who’s been with us for years, that we need to talk about all the life skills because sometimes they came in when their kid was three and it was about discipline.
Oh, my kid can’t listen. But over time, we’ve improved on that. The child’s improved on that. And we want to are you looking at the other ones?
What are you working on now? Your child is now 10. There’s a difference between a three year old and a 10 year.
What have you got to talk about now? We want them to be successful and trained forever on income. proving themselves.
And the only way to do that is to talk about growth and talk about different aspects of growth for them.
Not always talking about the exact same thing that we talk about when they were free. But what’s affecting them now as a 10-year-old, what’s going to affect them at 16 when they’re in high school, what’s going to affect them when they get to adulthood and they’re trying to be a successful adult in relationships, in their job, in every different way that we have to be successful as adults.@18:32 – Greg Moody (Chief Master Greg Moody, Ph.D.)
That’s perfect. And that’s exactly right. As you get better at these things, both as for you guys as students and for our parents is supporting their kids, then you’re going to get, continue to get better.
And we build on the foundation that we already built when they got started. And as you said, it doesn’t matter if they’re white belts and just get started with us or first, second, third, fourth, fifth degree black belts.
We want to keep renewing this every single year. So you’ll get every single year. We start this again and we’ll be meeting again and we’ll help you again with resetting these goals.
All right, well, I think that’s that kind of covers it. We don’t want to stay on here very long, but let’s get started.
Make sure you set your meeting up with us so that you can set your do your board and then work with Master San Juan on your vision and or and or one of the instructors.@19:21 – Laura Sanborn (Sr. Master)
We look forward to talking to you soon. Yes, sir. Looking forward to seeing everybody and really helping people be successful because that’s what we’re about.
