Labor Day isn’t just a day off…
I wanted to post about labor day…
Most people take this as just a day off, but I was wondering how labor day started so I looked it up…
It was in the late 1800s – labor disputes started because of bleak conditions and poor treatment of workers (12 or more hour workdays; hazardous work environments; meager pay; child workers some as young as 5). These turned into sometimes violent protests.
Labor unions and groups began to form and on Sept. 5, 1882 — a Tuesday — 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march in a parade from City Hall to Union Square in New York City as a tribute to American workers. Organized by New York’s Central Labor Union, It was the country’s first unofficial Labor Day parade. Three years later, some city ordinances marked the first government recognition, and legislation soon followed in a number of states.
Quite a few more labor disputes followed and, Congress, at the urging of President Grover Cleveland in an overture to the labor movement, (after Army troops had to come in to break up a strike with 250,000 workers in more than 25 states) passed an act on June 28, 1894, making the first Monday in September “Labor Day.” It was now a legal holiday.
It’s something we celebrate but it’s good to remember our history…
I was thinking about what I spend all my time on – Martial Arts – and it has grown from thousands of years of history and much of it developed because people were trying to keep themselves safe from robbers, thieves or warlords and organized groups in the area around them. When we study these arts – while there are enormous benefits personally way beyond self-defense – we need to remember where it all came from and what it’s about.
