Black Belt Goal Setting Season and Respect – Part 3!
We already talked about the first 2 parts of respect – within yourself and with your family… now it’s important to consider…
Respect for The World…
Respect for the world in this context is not promoting an environmental agenda (though I have nothing against this) it’s considering how we fit into the rest of the world.
Black Belts go through a ceremony where a candle gets lit symbolizing that as a Black Belt you have a responsibility to share knowledge with the world. I think often because this is such a big achievement, the new Black Belt and the families may gloss over this part of the ceremony but really it’s the most important part.
You see, we go through – every year – Black Belt Goal Setting Season where they come to understand that achieving a Black Belt – by itself – doesn’t mean much if, after they get that goal, they don’t do anything with it. Just like getting a college degree and never using the knowledge you gain – the degree is a nice piece of paper to hang up, maybe even could help you get a job – but if you don’t keep growing and expanding and SHARING the knowledge and skills you learned, then you will regress and lose what you gained.
So respect for the world in the way we as Black Belts think should be to share what we learn and make a commitment to continued growth so we are examples of being a Black Belt in our lives.
